Bob Knight's fifth season down in Lubbock is off to an inauspicious start in non-conference play. The Red Raiders were beaten 84-73 last night by UNLV. Since two losses to tough teams back in November, Tech's weaknesses have really shown in December. The loss to the Rebels marked the third time this month Knight's team has suffered a double-digit loss to a non-descript foe. The team was hammered at San Francisco, beaten at home by Louisiana Tech and yesterday they were the medicine Vegas used to cure a five-game losing streak.
Knight is attempting to work a freshmen class of seven players into his rotation, and there are no seniors on the roster. During last night's telecast, broadcaster Brent Musberger reported that Knight told him the most difficult part of this year's team is finding someone to step forward as a leader on the floor. Jarious Jackson at guard and Martin Zeno at forward have played well. Power forward Daryl Dora will probably come around, but several more will have to improve or this team will be buried in Big 12 play.
